Cannabis Law

Kaufman McGowan PLLC is one of the leading corporate cannabis law practices in New York and the United States.

Kaufman McGowan PLLC is recognized as one of the leading corporate cannabis law firms practices in the USA and New York. Building on our decades of corporate and securities law experience and our 9+ years actively engaged in the cannabis industry, we serve clients from California to the Hamptons from our office in Hauppauge, New York. We have participated in over $2 Billion of cannabis industry private placement, public offering, secured lending and other financing, merger and acquisition and corporate structuring and restructuring transactions. We have represented four of the five largest cultivators in California.

We represent leading vertically integrated and other state-licensed cannabis companies, hemp and CBD companies, investment funds, family offices and investment banking firms, with respect to their private placement, public offering, secured lending and other financing, merger and acquisition and corporate structuring and restructuring transactions, commercial contracts and other legal matters, including license applications in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. We often act as outsourced general counsel for clients that do not have internal legal resources, or work closely with in-house counsel. With our interdisciplinary expertise and extensive cannabis industry experience, we understand the nuances of cannabis industry-specific requirements and their interaction with the capital markets and commercial contracts.

With state-legal recreational cannabis coming to our home on the East Coast, we have applied our nationwide experience to our home markets, especially New York. We work closely with the New York Office of Cannabis Management, the New York Cannabis Control Board and key New York legislators to assist them with respect to the New York cannabis laws and regulations in general and where appropriate on behalf of our cannabis licensee and cannabis license application clients.

For example:

  • we have been advised by senior officials at the New York Office of Cannabis Management that our 75-page comment letter was the single best and most thoughtful comment letter out of the thousands that the New York Office of Cannabis Management received, and that the redlined revised regulations that we provided was the starting point for the revised New York proposed cannabis regulations.
  • we participated with the New York Office of Cannabis Management in providing a critical training program for its CCTM participants, in which we explained how to structure and finance a successful licensed recreational cannabis company.

We provide our cannabis licensee and cannabis license applicant clients with a full range of the services they need to obtain, keep and capitalize on their license, including a comprehensive checklist of the things necessary to prepare for license applications. This can provide you with the critical edge you may need to start your cannabis business.

We are frequent speakers at cannabis industry conferences such as the CWCB Cannabis World Business Conference, Benzinga, the Hamptons Cannabis Expo, City & State Cannabis Conference and several Long Island Cannabis Capital Forums, which we organized.

We closely monitor New York State cannabis regulatory developments and local cannabis regulations, including in New York, Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau County, Suffolk County, Westchester, Hudson Valley, Putnam County and in the townships thereof such as Huntington, Babylon, Brookhaven, Islip, Riverhead, Southampton, East Hampton, Hempstead, North Hempstead and Oyster Bay.
